IN FIRST RNC PROTEST, AIDS ACTIVISTS BARE ALL TO SHOW LACK OF COMPASSION IN BUSH AIDS PROGRAMS; URGE BUSH TO JOIN OTHER G-7 NATIONS TO CANCEL 100% OF POOR NATIONS' DEBTS TO FIGHT AIDS

(New York) - A group of AIDS activists led by members of ACT UP New York told the naked truth about the harmful impact of the Bush Administration's AIDS policies today. During a demonstration on the eve of the Republic National Convention (RNC), naked AIDS activists wearing nothing but the words "Bush, Stop AIDS, Drop the Debt Now" painted on their backs locked arms, chanting and entering the street surrounded by massive banners. The activists criticized Bush's refusal to support 100% debt cancellation to fund the fight against AIDS in 50 of the world's poorest countries, and his refusal to pay the U.S.'s fair share to multilateral, evidence-based AIDS interventions such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Bush's record on AIDS is expected to figure prominently during an RNC targeting moderate swing voters in battleground states.

"When it comes to fighting the AIDS crisis, Emperor Bush has no clothes," said Amanda Lugg of ACT UP. "Bush will come to New York and continue his empty posturing about his failed AIDS programs. The U.S. response to the pandemic has been inadequate. Compassion demands real action, not empty rhetoric."

At their most recent summit in June, the G-7 leaders discussed a proposal for 100% cancellation of debts owed by some poor countries to the IMF and World Bank; President Bush refused to support the proposal. On October 1 the G-7 Finance Ministers, including U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow, will meet to decide whether or not to move forward with the proposal. The proposal will not advance if President Bush objects, activists say.

The world's poorest nations spend billions repaying debts to international financial institutions and donors-money that is urgently needed for life saving AIDS treatment and prevention programs. African countries alone spend $15 billion each year on debt repayment. One-third of the world's 40 million people living with HIV live in a heavily debt-burdened country.
"This Administration has the opportunity to join with other G7 countries and call for 100% debt forgiveness for 50 of the world's poorest countries during the RNC, freeing up billions to fund the fight against AIDS," said Mark Milano of ACT UP New York. "8500 people die every day with AIDS because countries are too poor to pay for life saving treatment. 5 million people were infected with HIV in 2003 alone. President Bush could make debt cancellation a reality-but he is choosing not to."

The activists are also demanding that the U.S. live up to its commitments to the Global Fund; Bush is lobbying for a 64% cut in US contributions to the Global Fund in FY2005. The Global Fund is unable to launch a new funding round, and renewal of existing grants is jeopardized, in large part because of U.S. stinginess. "This Administration has demonstrated its disdain for multilateral cooperation on most foreign policy issues. Bush's short-changing of the Global Fund in favor of the bilateral President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is a key example," said Kaytee Riek of ACT UP.

A recent report by the Government Accounting Office found that domestic policies are a major obstacle to U.S. efforts to scaling up access to treatment through PEPFAR. These policies include the Bush Administration's obstruction of the procurement of cheap generic medicines and the subordination of evidence based approaches to HIV prevention to ideologically driven, unproven prevention programs.

Bayard Rustin, a gay man of African descent, was one of the great civil rights leaders in American history. A brilliant, heroic and extremely accomplished theoretician and tactical strategist, he was the central organizer of the legendary 1953 march on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his most famous oration, the “I Have a Dream“ speech. It was Bayard Rustin who deepened Dr. King’s understanding of the theory and practice of Mahatma Ghandi’s philosophy of non-violent direct action in the context of the struggle for the African American Freedom equality and civil rights struggles. Rustin himself used this model in the 1940’s 50’s and 60’s. As a gay men, a black man and a pacifist, Rustin paid a very high price for freedom. He was jailed as a gay man on so-called Morals Charges, jailed for three years as a pacifist for refusing the draft in World War 2 and jailed dozens of times as a black man for resisting Jim Crow segregation. He even spent 28 days on a chain gang.

We'll look at Rustin's role as a key advisor to Martin Luther King on non-violent direct action as a strategy for social change. Rustin also was one of the first freedom riders - with the Journey of Reconciliation - in 1947, a decade before the freedom rides of the 1960's. Rustin's career as an activist and organizer for the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the American branch of an international organization of Christian pacifists and in the civil rights movement was greatly affected by homophobia in this milieu

.During the McCarthy era, Rustin was outed in 1953 as a result of his arrest on morals charges in Pascedena, California. He was forced to resign from his job with the Fellowship of Reconcilliation because of public awareness of his homosexuality. In 1955 he met Dr. Martin Luther King in Montgomery, Alabama during the bus boycott protesting the Jim Crow system of racial segregation. We will also discuss his conservative turn, which began in the late 1960s.

OUT-FM hosts John Riley, Anthony Glover and Brad Taylor will interview four guests to discuss the life of this remarkable man: biographer John D'Emilio, War Resister League comrades Bill Sutherland and Dave McReynolds, and also life partner of 10 years, Walter Naegel.

John D'Emilio is the author of Lost Prophet, The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin and is a professor of history and of gender and women's studies at the University of Chicago. A Guggenheim and National Endowment of the Arts fellow from 1995-1997, he also served as the Founding Director of the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1982.

This program is part of the WBAI Winter Fundraising Drive, and copies of D'Emilio's book will be available as premiums to those pledging at certain donation levels.

On Saturday night the 14th of June, the internationally respected Hong Kong lesbian filmmaker Yau Ching premiered her newest film "Let's Love Hong Kong" for a New York audience.  The screening took place in the context of the "New Fest" - this year's New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the venue was The New School's Tishman Auditorium.  The large crowd was boisterous and enthusiastic in it's approval of Yau Ching's extraordinary feature film, and the filmmaker, whose career grew mostly out of New York, drew loud praise and other off-the-wall responses from fans in her in-person intro to the movie and the Q & A session afterward.  Out-FM's Brad Taylor reports his own very favorable reaction to the film and encourages everyone to check out "Let's Love Hong Kong" and Yau Ching's other film works and her poetry and other writing as well - her website is http://members.aol.com/hoyuk/.  Brad caught up with Yau during a press screening while she was in New York.
